Silent Witness grows into Bear Witness

Silent Witness is an ongoing investigation into how our familial knowledge and experience has shaped our individual patterns of thought and action and how this can be brought into the here and now and manifest collective change.

Bear Witness is about taking active responsibility for our thinking and outward action to manifest a nurturing environment and community.

Since becoming a mother my inward creative and personal exploration has naturally become more strongly about the 'other' and how our interactions effect change.

Silent Witness began during an Artist Residency, whereby I took the opportunity to indulge time and thought into why I have been intrigued by a photograph of my grandfather in his World War One Soldiers Uniform. And how society has shunned and kept silent the ongoing personal and collective trauma of War.

My findings are in no way conclusive. My investigation is focused on the smallest thought can influence change with collective thinking.

My methods of understanding and exploration always begin with drawing and painting. I continually observe and absorb the world around me. A specific impetuous will begin a new line of enquiry this is always something I feel great passion for. Whether a social comment or new understanding of scientific theory on BBC four.

At the essence of by being and Art Practice is the continual search of the complete state of beauty.

The above images are part of 'Silent Witness' Trilogy 1, to acompany the 2D works there is a short real time film.

Silent Witness Installation is expressed by different forms of media works which denotes ‘Regeneration’ by way of archetypal metaphor; the different media is to effect the connections of archetype on many levels.

Silent Witness portrays; the physical rebirth of Wakefield, the storehouse of history; cyclical vision and creativity.

The symbolism of trees represents perpetual regeneration therefore signifying ‘life death life’ cycle which is a focus in my Creative Practice. The imagery of Silent Witness depicts the winter of life, the shadow self, the seeds of new beginnings.

'Silent Witness' is my current installation as part of the opening of The Hepworth, Wakefield.

Dance Art

A quick review of the year so far.

I began the year by partaking in Turvey World Dance;

I once again enthusiastically joined other dancers and performed Contemporary Dance at Huddersfield Art Gallery, Yorkshire, UK. The inspiration was the John Cage Exhibition. Sheer delight.

EXHIBITIONS AT THE ART HOUSE, WAKEFIELD 26th January 2011

Carrie Scott-Huby will be part of ‘From Outside’ where you will see The Art House presenting video works projected onto their windows. These were produced during a day workshop for artists, which were facilitated by locally and internationally renowned artist Vicky Lucas. The videos represent what The Art House symbolizes is to each artist. In addition; The Art House is holding an exhibition of two groups' work. The groups attend weekly workshops at the Art House facilitated by Artists. The groups are Wakefield Visually Impaired Group and The Alzheimer’s Society: Carrie Scott-Huby delivers art classes to adults.

Image 1: A new work based on the Life cycle of Family Story. The inspiration was my Grandad Richard Scott who fought in the First World War. Fortunately he survived, What was the daily life cost of the experience of such great conflict? This is my exploration and how family story is passed down with unspoken words.

Image 2: Starting point, a poppy seed head depicting the life death life cycle. In amongst the ugliness of worlds happenings, beauty can always seen. To always honour and remember but to let go freely of all attachments. Not easy to put into daily practice. I hope this exploration will give deeper peace and understanding.

Birthing of Constellations

'Constellations' is the my new Science & Knitting Series. The idea has evolved from a combination of thoughts on Space, Constellations, Gestalt Theory and that of Family Constellations.

Each constellation is produce on groups of ten. The constellations are knitted on three needles, each having ten stitches per needle, the 'magic' of random happens! Each separate sculpture has its very own character. Each depicting initially subconsciously thought. An inspirational word or words pass through my 'free thinking process' the rhythm of this in turn subconsciously effects the pattern of knitting and the subsequent end result.

When I am involved in the creative process, I am in a meditative state of being and can be quite surprised at what I have creatively produced.

I intend to develop the constellation for a full twelve months.

I am very excited!

Friday 30th April 2010 I took part in a Dance workshop in the Gallery with the work of Alan Davie, workshop facilitated by Gerry Turvey.

To Dance, to move, to choreograph, to connect with other dancers..... to be surrounded by art.

I was in heaven!

Gerry Turvey's facilitation was inspirational.

It was great to Dance with a contemporary of mine from Bretton Hall, Dancer Rachel Green.

Thank you to all who took part, can't wait till the next one!

Creating Harmony

Universal Harmonies was my response to a collaborative art project. I love taking part in collaborative projects. It allows dedicated attention and time to challenge yourself and develop professionally and personally.

I was delighted to responded to Sound and Vision. Since being an under-Graduate I have wanted to develop the combining of the different disciplines I studied. I was fortunate to study simultaneously Visual Art/Textiles and Dance.

From my early years I have had the great fortune to have such positive influences by way of creativity, science, nature and all practical skills in-between. I naturally view the big picture whilst paying attention to the small detail.

Thus all this has the unveiling influence within my work.

The text I initially attached to the installation as was inspired by The Tao of Pooh anfd Te of Pigglet. As with many others I conect to the corrolation between Eastern Philosophy and Physic Theory.

Inspired!

4th February, An inspirational day in all.

Attended good in-house training on web presence at The Art House, Wakefield.

following on from this I attended an Exhibition and Artist Talk at Beam, The Orangery, Wakefield.

The Artist was Photographer John Davies.

I took from his photos and narration a genuine voice of a generation. Who sees great beauty in the Northern Urban Landscape. I felt a kindred connection being a Northern lass, coming from the Great Urban sprawl which is Greater Manchester.

In most part and is still passionate about he uses real film.... I was so inspired to once more to tread the pathways of township to promote the beauty and pride of the once Great National Industries and Craftsmanship of the Working Man's Palaces!

......only if I could buy the batteries for my manual Pentax camera, I have film crying out to be used.....

Snow Patterns

The above two images are more indulgent and are a personal reflection. Whilst a student at Bretton Hall Campus, University Leeds, I spent time reading & sketching, on a bench in a favourite suntrap by the Camellia House. This is the seat and window to the Camellia House.

I loved the natural patterns made by the frost on the window, plus reflection and the little birds prints.
The "simple things" in life bring me such beauty & delight .

Due to technical difficulties I am unable to upload further images film which accompanies the Batley Residency. May be at a much later date.

I worked collaboratively with Artist friends and colleague to develop my initial movement and mark-making.

The initial idea on movement / dance and mark-making I had years ago when a student at Bretton Hall. I do believe that everything does have it's own gestation period. I am so very excited to be making manifest my ideas now.

I was very fortunate to have studied separately and simultaneously, Textiles and Dance.

The disciplines of Art & of Dance are equal in passion as modes of self expression.

Movement Markmaking Music

For the last year I have been specifically been creating imagery to specific sound and music. Recording the immediacy of emotive movement visually.

This concept I have had for twenty years. I was fortunate to have studied at Bretton Hall College of the University of Leeds. I studied Fine Art Textiles Majoring in Honours Degree and Dance as minor Degree.

Dance and movement have been as integral as drawing and painting to my creative being. When I draw and paint I feel it is a performance, I create with my whole being.

Batley Art Gallery and Library is a Carnegie Building. A beautiful environment to have creative inspiration and acivity!

The gallery space is approximately 30ft x 50ft. The wall I was working on fifty foot long. Quite daunting, given that I do usually produce paintings and drawing larger easel size!

I have absolutely loved and embraced the Artist-in-Residence Opportunity.

I had the intention of audience participation, in the way narration. Every body’s story is important. I feel strongly that much social history is being lost.

Visitors were encouraged to leave written experiences of Batley. I would the visually translate this in compositions. This is still in progress.

I was overwhelmed by people’s generosity. A few of people shared their materials they use in their own compositions, born from shared experiences and creative passions.

Other regular visitors would instigate philosophical debate. An honour indeed!

more colour explorations

'Paris' this image was produced in response to a visit to Paris as an Art Student in 1990.
This is on display with other archival artworks and inspirational "stuff" from my studio!

7th October 2009 Colour exploration. My starting point was "The Beautiful Batley Map". It's Geometric forms.

As I started I was surprised I chose a heavy black line, I thought to myself "I don't do geometric"!

All the while thinking of a friend Carol Holloran, who is moving a way from geometrics and going organic, she claims with influence from myself?

Today's colour exploration on packaging paper. I did enjoy having the strong line to work with, then a little abandonment!

As I was photographing the image, I noticed the portrait behind, and noticed a similarity. colour line, technique.

The above thoughts occurred whilst re-arranging and removing working drawings and paintings. Purposefully changing dynamics. Changing my pattern of production.

Or so I thought..... when I look round this (large) gallery approx 50' x 30', I have a mini revelation ! And I realise my patterns are distinctive. The above images I think depict this?

Making connections

Batley Art gallery is attracting new visitors.

There are also beginnings of regular visitors following the creative process.

Regular gallery visitors enjoying a new exhibition, people coming along to view an artist at work, to be inspired for example by my artwork titles for poetry and song, pus those who seek philosophical debate!

I feel privileged by this.

I am gaining more interest in how the visitors whom wish to 'chat' end up following a gentle, but non-the-less religious and or political line of debate!

I have been pondering on this? Is it due to the creative process itself having a 'meditative' quality?

Further to this, I would say I was a "spiritual" person whose art work subliminally or directing contains the essence of "spirit".

It is lovely and inspiring that artists are enthused to come along and share their creative inspirations with me. This is appreciated for different reasons.

Well! what a week..... I've tried and tried and tried and tried and tried to get into my blog....... and here I am. I don't know what was not happening ... if anyone has any suggestions please advise me.

A word of advice... it is true "pride comes before a fall..." . This relates to my self congratulatory attitude because I had set up the blog by myself. The result was I unwittingly set up two blogs and attached myself to a group blog I have been involved with, passtheparcelart.blogspot.com.
